At 1:43 pm on Tuesday, emergency crews were dispatched to a reported traffic collision with injuries on State Route 18 near Live Oak Drive in Running Springs. This is a popular turnout for mountain visitors to play in the snow even though it is not designated as an official snow play recreation area.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Running Springs Fire Department (RSFD), and the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CalFIRE) responded to the incident and found a 7-year-old boy who had been ran over by a vehicle in a turnout westbound on SR18 just past Nob Hill. The child was up and walking around when first responders arrived.

According to the CHP, the boy was playing in the snow with his family prior to the incident. He was walking in the turnout when a vehicle in the turnout, who was attempting to drive away, slipped on the ice, hitting the boy. The boy was dragged under the vehicle but was able to be pulled out by witnesses.

The fire department assessed the boy for injuries and found none. He was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. Traffic was not affected by the incident. CHP is investigating.

  1. why isn’t forestry out there checking on cars to see if they’re legally parked too many cars go out there and they’re never legally parked I thought they were supposed to pay for a pass

  2. Im so glad this little boy was ok…..But parents need to watch there kids…. And dont play in the
    Snow where a turnout is…..Not smart…..

  3. Glad the kid was ok! There is a reason for the traffic rules people! You put everyone at risk and increase highway traffic when you ignore them!! Go to designated snow play areas!!

  4. Who on there right mind will let there kids play right there when cars are driving by, they must not care about there kids or have to many to get one go smdh
