On December 31st 2018 Maple Lane in Big Bear City became a ice rink. Multiple vehicles sliding sideways with two cars over into a ditch while the sheriff’s department blocked the road for approximately two hours. Officials were trying to clear all of the vehicles with no chains or traction from the mess.
A Cal Fire unit arrived on scene and ended up sliding backwards into sheriff’s department vehicle; nobody was injured. Additional sheriff units arrived on scene to take the report.
The Big Bear Public Works department doubled up with CalTrans to put cinders and a brine solution on the roadway to melt the ice. The roadway is back open at this time but drivers are to remain vigilant of changing conditions and temps dropping.
