Animal Rescue Coordinators to be Welcomed November 6th

SAN BERNARDINO— San Bernardino County Supervisor Janice Rutherford invites animal lovers to
join her at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the Government Center in San Bernardino, located at 384 N. Arrowhead Ave., to welcome the new
Animal Rescue Coordinators recently hired by the San Bernardino County Department of Public
Health, Animal Care and Control Division.

“Rescue organizations play a significant role in helping us find loving homes for the thousands of
animals who end up in the County’s care every year, and I am hopeful we can enhance that
relationship and save even more animals by having two staff members dedicated to helping rescue
groups accomplish their mission,” said Rutherford, who recommended creating the positions earlier
this year after hearing from the animal rescue community.

The Rescue Coordinators will perform a variety of duties necessary for the evaluation and marketing
of animals for adoption, development of rescue group contacts and transfer of animals to rescue
group organizations. They will promote humane care of animals through education and humane
proactive animal service programs committed to the adoption of shelter animals and ending pet
overpopulation while recognizing the value of animal rescue groups to help place companion animals
into new homes.

More than 100 people applied for for the positions when the County began recruitment in June.
Ultimately, Animal Care and Control chose to hire two part-time Coordinators in an effort to provide
seven-day-a-week coverage to support their non-profit partners.

San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control currently works with 508 enrolled non-profit
organizations who serve as Rescue Group Partners to help rehabilitate and place homeless pets.
“Our Rescue Group Partners are a critical and vital component to helping those animals most in need
of specialized care and attention,” stated Brian Cronin, Chief of Animal Care and Control.

Last year alone, Rescue Group Partner organizations adopted 3,251 homeless pets from San
Bernardino County animal shelters located in Devore and Big Bear Lake.
In addition to welcoming the Animal Rescue Coordinators, Supervisor Rutherford will also be
presenting a proclamation to Animal Care and Control in honor of the Board of Supervisors declaring
the first week of November as Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week.
