At 12:51 pm on Monday, emergency crews responded to a vehicle fire reported on State Route 330 near 5th Fountain (between the upper and middle passing lanes). The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Running Springs Fire Department (RSFD), and California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CalFIRE) responded to the incident and found a sport utility vehicle fully involved on the right shoulder on the up bound SR330. A Big Bear Fire Authority Battalion Chief who happened to be on his way down the hill also assisted. Several passerby’s stopped to help and tried to extinguish the fire before the fire engines arrived, but were unsuccessful. The female driver, who was the only occupant, was able to get out of the vehicle safely before it completely engulfed in flames. The vehicle fire, as well as a small spot fire in the vegetation, was quickly put out by the first responders.

The driver did not know why her vehicle caught fire. The roadway remained open during the entire incident. CHP is investigating.
