Kdog’s Road Report 4/30/18

Good morning, commuters! Only five days until the weekend! Your road scholar is here to report that there is fog out there today… and it’s not that silly, weak fog like they get out at the beach. Indeed, today’s fog hovers right on the border of moderate to heavy… it will slow you down some. I called it moderate, but KFI reported it as heavy… on the four- lane section of Hwy 18, you can see three or four dashed lines into the future, but not much farther than that. So… heavy, moderate, you decide. Maybe it’s moderately heavy… or heavily moderate.

Fog seems to be heaviest around 5000 feet or so. Heading down the mountain, it gradually thins during the descent, and is completely clear by around 3500 feet or so, near Lower Bonnie Canyon Bridge.

But, other than fog, there don’t seem to be any of the other “usual suspects” out there. It’s not cold enough for ice, not wet enough for slippery roads, and not windy enough for rocks.

Here’s something I’ve been noticing for a week: I’m sort of curious to know if anybody else has noticed it. About a half of a mile downhill for the Crestline Bridge (Hwy 18 x Hwy 138), more or less going past the Old Mormon “horseshoe” Road, I smell marijuana. Every time! The first couple of times I noticed it, I figured somebody in a vehicle ahead of me was Cheeching or Chonging, but now I’ve decided that the aroma is based on geography, not upon being behind a 1972 conversion van with velour seats and satin curtains. I don’t really have a lot of theories as to why that section of road seems to be so aromatic, but I am wondering if others have noticed that, too. I’m just going to sit back here with a few bags of Doritos and see what y’all have to say.

In case anybody was wondering, yesterday, uphill traffic on Hwy 18 was detoured through Old Waterman Canyon Road, due to a motorcycle accident. It’s handy that we have the Canyon Road as detour for that section of road, or else the multi- hour closure of uphill 18 would have been even more epic than it was. As for the rider, best wishes for recovery.

  1. Good job reporting ! I love this new site shared in Crestline.I would like to see more details on local crime and a follow up on the crimes and the criminals.

    • Karen, your suggestion is valid! The possibility exists, as there can be strong similarities between those two scents… however, I’m pretty sure that this is weed, not skunk. I am really not any type of expert on the finer subtleties of wacky weed aromas… but I would like to know what others think of what they’re smelling as they pass that area.
