One positive statement of good is more powerful than 1,000 negative thoughts; and two positive statements of good are more powerful than 10,000 negative thoughts.

-Catherine Ponder

One very healthy practice is to use positivity when dealing with difficulties.  The Mayo Clinic, known world-wide for its wellness eminence, gives some great advice about positive thoughts and positive self-talk. The benefits are big. A chance for a longer life is one.  Depression can be transformed. Our emotional and physical well-being improves. Heart health is another gain.  The path to positivity has little cost and the investment pays for the duration of one’s life.

Find an eagerness to see the dispiriting sides of life with humor, optimism, resolve and hope.  The biochemistry of hope is medicine. Our cells are bathed in chemicals of comfort with a hopeful outlook and a light-hearted stance. There are times of deep, deep grief in which we pause our positivity while according time and space for sorrow. When life brings moments to grieve, gently ascribe to the age-old practices of your faith, your heart and the time-honored measures that come to us from holistic practices. Then, when you can, move back into the lane of greeting life on life’s terms. Of finding the view that gives promise and perspective.

Keep a list of positive statements…at your desk, on the refrigerator, on your phone, in a journal. When life brings adversity, be ready.  Have a practice in place and know that you can rise to the moment of action with dignity, wisdom, competence and commitment to you.

Let your self-talk be a narrative of love. A soliloquy of all the good things that comprise you. Declare the flair you have for what you do, who you are and what gifts you bring to this world. Some may say this is arrogant or pretentious. Not so. We are wired to thrive on love. We are wired to bask in the splendor of self-appreciation and self-respect. When positivity fades, we are lost in the dark, winding road of despair. Debasing words can erase, dim, and limit those of strength, purpose and perseverance.

For much of my life I have worked with folks at-risk. One thing I have learned in five decades of this effort is that each has an infinite gift. As the gifts unveil, a mosaic of brilliance becomes our bounty. An abundance of these gems give grace. Words and deeds emerge to chronicle untold greatness as I work with those in substance recovery and prison rehabilitation. In those times I am carried into moments of pure bliss, a witness to something nameless, words too small for such grand moments.

Chart how you feel when someone genuinely acknowledges your greatness. Your color is enhanced, there can be calmness and there is often a feeling of immense well-being. Eyes dance, smiles emerge, and we find ourselves in the throes of a delicious space of inner harmony.

I have followed the teachings of Dr. Catherine Ponder throughout my life. I have marveled at her positive spirit and flawless persistence in positivity. I love this approach to life. I have used it in classrooms, conferences, workshops, healing sessions and in the market! Everywhere. Dr. Ponder reminds us to be persistent with our positive statements and then they will negate the racing thoughts in our head that do not serve or heal. At age 92 she still has us in her tutelage of wisdom that has served thousands through the decades. We are in the wings of her teachings, a guidance born from devotion and practiced faithfully for her entire adult life. Her words remind us that we are truly in charge of our physical and mental health, and can use thought power to shift the stream of any words that denounce or diminish.

Let everyone you meet, everyone you engage with, and everyone you love see and know the grand being that you are. See the world from the vantage of positive language.  Reverend Ponder suggests that one positive thought is more powerful than a thousand negative thoughts. An efficient way to live. Thought power!

See where you take yourself on the journey of positive language. Don’t be frugal with your words. Describe yourself with passion. View a challenge from the position of positivity and watch the situation become easier to manage.  See how you govern tough moments with a steady hand and heart. Surround yourself with positive companions. The vibration will lift one and all.

See the world through the eyes of hope. Discard old thought forms that stem from calamity. Long ago there was a film about Calamity Jane. Throughout my life, some have referenced that namesake when a hard moment came my way. I choose to discard that image and claim the Ponder version of life, with all of its possibility and promise.  To see life from the vista of abundant solutions and abundant resolution. To apply health practices that promote thought forms that create the green in the pasture and blooms in the garden. To see beyond the shadow of any moment into the mystical haven that becomes ours, over and over, in our dialogues of grace.

  1. I love it, excellent words of wisdom and thoughtful writing. Truly inspiring advice about self improvement & empowerment without the fear of viewing oneself in a light of vanity. I seek to treat myself with more kindness, instead of the usual harsh criticism. I think posting positive statements within my vicinity would be very helpful indeed.
