Assault with a Deadly Weapon Turns into a Standoff

On Thursday May 2nd approximately 9:43 p.m., deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to an assault with a deadly weapon on the 24100 block of Horst Drive in Crestline.

According to a Sheriff press release, Howard Edward Frederick, 33 years old, got into a verbal assault with a confidential female victim at a residence. He reportedly held a handgun to the female victim’s head and threatened to kill her. She was able to flee the residence and make contact with deputies.

Deputies attempted to contact the man at the residence. Frederick barricaded himself in the residence for several hours. The California Highway Patrol was on scene for Traffic control at the intersection of Horst and Lake Gregory Drive. A helicopter was overhead and according to bystanders, police canines could be heard barking during the standoff.

Frederick eventually came out of the residence and turned himself into the custody of the San Bernardino sheriff’s department without incident. He was subsequently arrested for PC 245 (a), assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies transported him to West Valley detention Center.
