Vehicle Drives off Roadway and Crashes During Heavy Fog

By Scott Limpus

An elderly driver escaped serious injuries on Monday night when he got disorientated in the thick fog and slid off Green Valley Lake Road. At 10:35pm a traffic accident with unknown injuries was reported near Camp Pondo. A passerby, who was an off-duty firefighter, was flagged down by the driver after he climbed back up to the roadway. The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Running Springs Fire Department (RSFD), and San Bernardino County Fire Department (SBCoFD) responded to the area and found a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee approximately 10’ over-the-side of the road. The lone occupant had some minor facial abrasions but declined medical treatment.

The vehicle was traveling up Green Valley Lake Road from State Route 18, and as he passed Camp Pondo, he lost view of the fog line and slid off the side of the road. The vehicle remained upright and the driver was able to extricate himself from the vehicle. The off-duty firefighter and employees from the Camp remained with the driver until CHP arrived.

One lane of Green Valley Lake Road was blocked for a short time by emergency crews until the vehicle was recovered. CHP is investigating the cause of the accident, but weather is likely to be a factor.
