University Fire Stomped Out by Fire Crews Amidst Gusting Santa Ana Winds

Cassidy Yorks, Staff Writer

A Santa Ana wind-driven brush fire burned behind Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday evening. Authorities said it did not threaten the college campus.

The fire started a little bit before 8 p.m. in the Badger Canyon area just above Cal State San Bernardino. Authorities said the 3-acre blaze appeared to be moving uphill and was fueled by dry brush and strong winds. In less than an hour it grew to about 30 acres with the potential of 100-200 acres. The campus was not under threat but they set up structure protection out of an overabundance of caution.

Voluntary evacuations were also issued for residents living near 59th Street and I street. But no structures were threatened. Strike teams were in place as a precaution. Around 9:45 pm an official statement from San Bernardino county indicated that the structure threat has been mitigated.

Even though the fire was not burning in the forest the U.S Forest Service responded to help prevent it from spreading. The cooperating agencys’ quick response stopped this fire from getting out of control. Cal fire, San Bernardino County Fire, Rialto Fire Department, U.S Forest Service Fire and many others jumped into action to prevent this fire from spreading. At around 10 pm the fire was out and crews were in mop up mode. Authorities will remain on scene in case any flare ups occur. The cause of this fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation.
