At 2:38 pm on Saturday, emergency crews from the mountain and valley were dispatched to a reported two-vehicle traffic collision with possible injuries on State Route 18 at Lower Waterman Canyon.

The San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) arrived on-scene just above the “100 mile per hour straightaway” to find a white Buick sedan and green Subaru, both with moderate damage, blocking the #1 (left) upbound lane. All occupants were out of their vehicles and appeared uninjured so the fire department and ambulance were canceled.

According to a statement made by the Subaru driver, he was traveling upbound in the #1 lane approaching the curve just after the long straightaway above lower Waterman Canyon when the white vehicle allegedly attempted to pass him in the #2 lane. The Buick reportedly lost control on the cinder as it skidded over the fog line and crossed over to the #1 lane allegedly striking the Subaru. Both vehicles ended up in the #1 lane with moderate frontend damage. Afternoon traffic was only temporarily affected as tow trucks worked to clear the wreckage.

SBPD provided traffic control and is investigating the cause of the accident, but speed is likely to be a contributing factor.
