The crew of 40King1 conducted a hoist rescue of an injured climber in the Big Falls area of Forest Falls

LOCATION:    Big Falls, Forest Falls, CA

VICTIM:          Emilio Gomez, 33 years of age, resident of Redlands

SUMMARY:
On July 24, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. Comm Center received a 911 call reporting a climber had fallen at Big Falls and sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries. San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel responded to the location, contacted Emilio Gomez, and determined a hoist rescue would be necessary due to the terrain.

San Bernardino County Sheriff helicopter 40King1 conducted a hoist rescue of Gomez. The crew chief inserted an air medic approximately 100 feet down to the victim, followed by a Bauman Bag rescue harness. The air medic and SBCFD personnel placed Gomez in the Bauman Bag, which the crew chief hoisted back into the aircraft. 40King1 then flew the victim to a nearby landing zone, where they transferred Gomez to the care of Mercy Air 285, for transport to the hospital.
