Suspicious Vehicle Fire Sparks Vegetation Fire in Erwin Lake

At 4:43 pm on July 20th, multiple calls went into 911 dispatch reporting a vehicle fire. The callers also indicated that the fire had spread into vegetation on Highway 38 and Erwin Ranch Rd in Big Bear City.

Firefighters from Station 283 Sugarloaf arrived on scene first. An SUV fully engulfed with 1/4 acre of brush prompted a multi agency response. Firefighters got a line around the fire quickly and cut down nearby trees to stop any chances of further spread.

An eye witness reported he saw a male and female running from the area. Other reports heard loud explosions before seeing and smelling smoke. The quick work of all agency’s stopped the fire with in 20 minutes. Investigators have been called to the scene.
