This super side takes us down south with these traditional fried green tomatoes. While green tomatoes are usually enjoyed in late summer when they are most plentiful, grocery stores generally keep them in stock year-round. There’s also a good chance of snagging some at the Farmer’s Market, so keep your eyes peeled for those tasty treats. Try this side the next time you grill up some dinner!

Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

3 firm green tomatoes

½ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. black pepper

½ cup flour

¼ cup milk

2 eggs – beaten

2/3 cup cornmeal

¼ cup vegetable oil

Directions:

Cut the tomatoes into ½” slices, then sprinkle the slices with the salt and pepper. Let the tomato slices sit for 15 minutes.

Set out the milk, flour, beaten eggs, and cornmeal into separate bowls

Dip the tomato slices in the milk, then the flour, then the eggs, then the cornmeal. Be sure to coat both sides. Repeat until all of the tomato slices are coated.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat, then fry the tomatoes for 5 minutes on each side, or until they are brown. (Reduce the heat if the tomatoes brown too quickly.)

Remove the slices to a paper-towel lined plate to cool. Sprinkle with additional salt and pepper, if desired, while they are fresh out of the pan. Cool and serve.

  1. Yum. You should repost this article later in the summer when we are trying to figure out what to do with our green tomatoes.
