VIDEO REPORT: Solo Vehicle Accident, Technical Rescue in Running Springs

At 10:34 a.m. a 911 call summoned multiple agencies to respond to a traffic accident with moderate to Major injuries.

The vehicle, with two occupants, was teetering over the side of a retaining wall near a bridge on Keller Peak Road in Running Springs. One patient was transported by ambulance to a helicopter that had landed and was waiting at Charles Hoffman Elementary. Initially emergency crews requested two airships, but due to the height and weight of the male patient, he had to be transported by ground ambulance. Both were taken to hospitals down the hill.

Due to the positioning of the vehicle in the crash, struts and straps had to be used to secure the vehicle before the occupants could be extricated. Rescue workers stated that the vehicle was teetering and that the patients could not be attended to until it could be stabilized.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage as it appeared to launch off of a hillside, fly over a guardrail, hit a tree and then roll over landing on a rock teetering over a ravine.

Multiple agencies responded including San Bernardino County Fire Department, Running Springs Fire, Arrowbear Lake Fire, Cal Fire, United States Forest Service, and the California Highway Patrol.

There was also two dogs in the vehicle which escaped harm. A California Highway Patrol officer on scene indicated that there was no evidence of impairment from drugs or alcohol when they spoke with the victims.

Mountain Auto Service had a recovery truck as well as a flatbed on scene. The scene was clear and the roadway opened at 2:08 p.m. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
