The Running Springs Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Community Memorial Day Celebration on Monday. A late-season snowfall overnight could not stop a large crowd from gathering around the flagpole as fog rolled into downtown at the corner of Hilltop Boulevard and Holiday Lane. Local active duty and military veterans, Chamber Board Members, Boys and Girl Scouts, and members of the Running Spring Fire Department joined community members for a celebration to commemorate all the brave men and women who have passed away while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday established in 1868 for remembering and honoring the people who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday is observed on the last Monday of May. Two other days celebrate those who serve or have served in the U.S. military. Veterans Day, (originally known as Armistice Day) is observed annually on November 11th and celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. Armed Forces Day, is a remembrance celebrated on the third Saturday in May, specifically honoring those currently serving in the U.S. military.

George S. Patton quoted, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.” The staff of The Mountain Reporter honor the men and women of our Armed Forces – past and present – especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our freedom.
