The National Weather Service, San Diego, issued a high wind warning for the San Bernardino County Mountains on Tuesday. The winds blew in with thick black clouds as temperatures dropped in the afternoon. By nightfall winds were gusting across the mountain and roads in Big Bear had begun to ice over.

The portion of Highway 18 known as the Arctic Circle, was plagued all evening into the night with falling rocks. A two foot diameter rock reportedly landed on Highway 189 near Blue Jay, blocking the northbound lane.

Tree branches and trash cans along with other debris lined most roadways in the mountain communities.

In Skyland, a small neighborhood in Crestline, high winds toppled a large tree. During the fall, electrical lines were town down, promoting a response from Edison. Within minutes of the original dispatch, workers were up on the poles assessing damage and implementing repairs. The CHP blocked traffic on Skyland Drive while Edison performed repairs.

After midnight, the CHP requested CalTrans to respond to Highway 138 and Highway 18 for rock runs. Motorists are urged to use caution during the morning commute. Roadways are expected to be littered with debris.
