Rock Slide Takes Out Vehicle on Highway 18 Causing Traffic Snafu

On 5/13/18 at 5:22 p.m., the California Highway Patrol received reports of a rock slide on Highway 18. The caller reported that they were driving a vehicle that was hit in the landslide.

The location was reported downbound 18 before the Crestline Bridge.

Somehow, during the beginning of the call, a towing company from San Bernardino was erroneously dispatched to the scene. Once the error was fixed and Mountain Auto arrived on scene, the tow driver requested the CHP to block traffic. The involved vehicle had come to rest in a turnout too small for the driver to hook up the vehicle safely.

At 6:22 p.m., a highway patrol until arrived onscene and held traffic to allow the driver to hook up the vehicle.

It is unknown at this time if there were any injuries.

As of 6:47 p.m., the roadway was reported as clear.
