Overheated Brakes Cause Truck Fire on Highway 18

Just before 4 p.m., the California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County Fire responded to the report of a truck on fire. The location given was on Highway 18 just above lower Waterman. Upon arriving on scene, crews found a fully loaded box truck that was smoking from the rear cargo area. The fire apparently came from overheated brakes and traveled into the box cargo area. This was a fully loaded moving truck that was transporting the contents of a home that was being moved. Most of the contents were removed by the fire department and burning portions of the contents were extinguished. The truck was also extinguished and later firefighters went through the truck meticulously looking for hotspots amongst the remaining contents.

Initial reports indicated that the fire had spread into the vegetation and a full response was enroute however the first crew on scene was able to verify that there was no vegetation involved. Remaining crews that were responding canceled.

The cause of the fire at this time is apparently overheated brakes and there were no injuries reported.
