We hope you’ll join us to Let the Sunshine In at our 28th Annual Le Grand Picnic fundraiser to support Mountains Community Hospital. This year’s flower-powered event will be held on Sunday, July 21 from 5:00–7:30 pm in the hospital’s Rose Garden. Gloria Loring – celebrity, actress and recording artist – will be returning as the Mistress of Ceremonies. The event includes food and drink from 15 local restaurants, unique silent and live auction items and experiences, and a drawing for a gold coin valued at over $1,200! DJ Clay will be spinning music from the Summer of Love and everyone is invited. “The views from the hospital are incredible, but the location poses some challenges, namely wind and lack of shade. We hope that moving it later in the day will make the event more comfortable for everyone,” says Kim McGuire, MCH Community Development Director. Some of the funds raised at this year’s event will help fund the purchase of a new 3D mammography system that combines multiple breast X-rays to create a three-dimensional picture of the breast. The cost of the machine is $350,000. “Our Radiology Department has selected The Hologic Genius™ 3D Mammography System and the MCH Foundation Board and I remain confident that we will be able to raise the full amount through grant funding and donations from our community,” says Kim.
Our current machine is considered an End of Life system and is past the date where the manufacturer can guarantee parts or repairs. Should the system suffer a significant failure, it would severely impact our ability to provide this service to the community. Patients are at the center of everything we do, and a new 3D mammography system would help transform the patient experience in a number of significant ways.

The Genius™ 3D Mammography exam, available on the Hologic 3Dimensions system, provides better, earlier breast cancer detection. The exam is more accurate and detects 20-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone.

With pain being the number one complaint during mammography exams, fear prevents many women from making regular breast imaging appointments a priority. The 3D system features the SmartCurve™ breast stabilization system that is clinically proven to deliver a more comfortable mammogram compared to a traditional mammography exam.
Fewer False Alarms
Greater accuracy also means reducing the chances of being called back for additional unnecessary screenings. The Genius™ 3D exam reduces callbacks by up to 40%, meaning our patients will also experience greater peace of mind and less stress.
Better for Dense Breasts
The Genius™ 3D exam is the only mammogram FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts. Studies show that the Genius™ 3D exam has greater accuracy than 2D mammography for women across a variety of ages and breast densities.
MCH Foundation is also continuing to raise money for the Willerth Education Center to serve our community and hospital staff. The Willerth Education Center will be built on top of a parking structure, which will be constructed in the tiered parking area near the Medical Office Building. The approximate cost of the Willerth Education Center is $2 million.
