On Wednesday at 3:30 pm, a traffic accident occurred on Big Bear Blvd and Shore Drive in Big Bear City.

A motorcycle was traveling westbound on Big Bear Blvd when an eastbound vehicle was attempting to turn left onto Shore Drive. The vehicle turned in front of the motorcycle and they collided, sending the rider flying through the air.

The man on the motorcycle sustained traumatic injuries during the accident. He was transported by Medic Ambulance 282 to Big Bear Airport where he was airlifted to Arrowhead Reigonal Medical Center by Mercy Air.

Incidentally, the crash was recorded on a California Highway Patrol unit’s dash cam as the officer happened to be traveling on the roadway at the same time. According to statements made at the scene, the apparent cause of the accident was a head-on collision that occurred when the vehicle turned into the path of the motorcycle.

While the other vehicle involved was heavily damaged from the collision, the driver was able to drive it from the scene without being towed. The accident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

  1. I was driving the car behind the SUV that turned in front of the motorcycle. We stopped immediately and my wife assisted with the care and comfort of the young victim while I took care of traffic. we were thankful he was conscious and at least appeared he would survive. Stay alert out there, you never know what the other driver is going to do!

    • Hi Terry- the Young man on the motorcycle is my son, Matt. I just want to thank you and your wife from the bottom of my heart for all that you did for him after the accident. Matt told us that your wife held his head to keep the hot pavement from burning him and comforted him until the paramedics arrived. Matt said that your wife an angel and helped him through the scariest moment of his life. As his mother, words cannot even begin to express just how grateful I am that people as kind as you both were there to care for my son when I couldn’t be. I also wanted to let you both know that he is going to be okay! The doctors have said that it is a miracle that he survived. I hope that I have the chance to thank you both in person someday. You both are angels ❤️

      • Hi Liz,
That is great news! Please know we simply reacted the way we hope others would if it were one of us or one of our children. This is not the first time I have found myself in this exact situation, though the outcome was not as favorable. Whenever something like this happens I understand for the person(s) involved the world has come to a stop and the only thing that matters is survival. I am truly grateful he is going to be okay. My wife was choked up by your reply, though I would never publicly admit it, so was I. I am okay with the moderator sharing my email with you exclusively, If you would like to give us a more detailed update on his condition.

  2. We prayed for this young man this morning. I am trusting that he will have a full recovery.

  3. I left a reply to Liz a couple days ago, but it did not show up. Suffices to say we simply did what we hope someone else would do for us or our children. Were happy and thankful he will be okay. Our youngest daughter was there too helping me with traffic and supplied her jacket to help with the hot pavement (white shirt in the first photo). Moderator, you can give my email exclusively to Liz if she wants to give us a more detailed update on Matt’s condition.
