If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around, can you take it?

Here on the San Bernardino National Forest, we offer permits for personal fuelwood gathering for downed wood at $20 a cord, with a two cord minimum per purchase (meaning you’ll be spending $40 at minimum).

Permit holders will then need to abide by the permit’s terms, including mapped locations and fire safety, among other rules. The locations help with fuels reduction efforts and are always near public roads. The fire safety rules are obvious: No one wants to spark a fire!
