Have some fun for lunch! A little whimsy is never a bad thing, and what’s more whimsically nostalgic than a Sloppy Joe? Everyone can remember tucking into one of these marvelously messy sandwiches as a kid, but they are never quite as good as you remember. Well, this recipe gets rid of the canned sandwich meat mix and elevates the Sloppy Joe from kid-friendly classic to a grown-up lunchtime staple. The home-made touch really makes the difference!

Serve the Sloppy Joe mix on cheesy Kaiser rolls for an extra special treat (but hamburger buns work, too).

Sloppy Joe Recipe

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef

1 medium onion – diced

1 small green bell pepper – diced

1 – 8 oz. can tomato sauce

3 tbsp. water

1 tsp. onion powder

1 ½ tsp. chili powder

1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp. garlic powder

¼ tsp. red pepper flakes

Salt & pepper

Directions:

Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium/high heat, about 5 minutes. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook until the onion is translucent, about 3 minutes. Strain off the fat, if desired. (leaner meat will have less liquid to drain.)

Add to the skillet the tomato sauce, water, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, chili powder, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and salt & pepper to taste. Stir to combine.

Bring the contents of the skillet up to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Serve on buns or rolls.
