On Valentine’s Day of 2019 a potent winter storm hit the mountains and dropped upwards of 9 inches of rain. This caused massive amounts of erosion on the mountain, most notably in a section of Highway 18 known as “13 Curves.” This is the section of Highway 18 between Green Valley Lake Road and Snow Valley Ski Resort. Multiple sections of the roadway in this area were washed over with high volumes of water. This eroded the supporting hillsides and undermined the roadbed.

As of the evening of that storm, Highway 18 was under a hard closure at Green Valley Lake Road that extends to the Big Bear Dam. We are awaiting further information from Caltrans regarding the repairs and estimated time to reopening the highway.
