I love this simple and family-pleasing take on a beef stroganoff. It uses ground beef instead of beef strips and the sauce is a little more savory than creamy. I prefer to serve this dish over steamed white rice, because the rice soaks up the sauce in the loveliest way! It’s also absolutely delicious over egg noodles, served like a more traditional stroganoff.

Hamburger Stroganoff Recipe

Ingredients:

2 tbsp. butter

1 lb. ground beef

1 tsp. onion powder

1 tsp. garlic powder

¼ tsp. smoked paprika

½ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. black pepper

1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 medium yellow onion – diced

1 medium green bell pepper – diced

12 oz. mushrooms – sliced

3 stalks celery – chopped

1 ½ cups diced tomatoes in juices

1 cup sour cream

Directions:

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium/high heat. Add the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Break up the beef with the back of a fork and cook for about 10 minutes, until the beef is browned.

Add the onion, green pepper, and celery and cook for 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook for an additional 3 – 5 minutes, until the onion is limp and the mushrooms are tender.

Crush the tomatoes a bit with the back of a fork, then add to the skillet and increase the heat to high. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and gently simmer for 20 minutes.

Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the sour cream. If the cream cools the dish too much, return the pan to low heat until it reaches desired serving temperature. Be careful here; too much heat will curdle the sour cream. Serve over steamed white rice or egg noodles.
