It will start at 5 a.m. on September 9th and lasts for 12 days. CalTrans and the California Highway Patrol are working together to ensure that the contractor hired to perform all of the repairs, clean up, culvert installation and rock fall barrier installation are able to be as done safely and as quickly as possible.

On Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m., both CalTrans and the California Highway Patrol held a press conference at the City Creek Ranger Station, right next to the upbound stoplight on 330. Members of the media from various agencies were present as Emily Leinen, the CalTrans District 8 public information officer, explained how the final preparations have been made and that the closure will be executed as planned.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. The closure begins at 5 a.m. on September 9th and will last for 12 days.

2. The closure will only be extended if harsh weather impedes the work schedule.

3. CHP will establish and enforce closures on both sides of the construction area that goes from Live Oak Drive in Running Springs to Highland Avenue in the City of Highland.

4. Emergency vehicles will still be able to access the highway and use it.

5. In the event of a wildfire, CalTrans will open the 330 for the general public to evacuate if needed.

6. Highway 18 from San Bernardino to Running Springs will remain open as a viable route to access the Big Bear area.

7. Highway 18 from Lucerne Valley to Big Bear will remain open as a viable alternate route as well.

8. All construction on Highway 38 will be stopped during the closure to ease congestion of commuters taking this alternate route.

9. Rock scaling, installation of rock fall barriers, graffiti removal, guard rail repair, asphalt repair and sealing, and highway litter removal are just a few of the many tasks that will get done during this closure. (Bridge repairs will continue after the closure)

10. For more information you can contact the California Highway Patrol office in Running Springs by calling (909) 867-2791 or you can contact Emily Leinen at her office by calling (909) 383-1910.

Caltrans District 8 and the California Highway Patrol would like to remind the motoring public to follow instructions given by staff at the road closures, give yourself extra time to get to your destination, and follow all signage regarding closures and detours.

  1. Thank you for making our roads safe from the annual wear and tear and for not neglecting to keep our landscape beautiful.

  2. Please address all Spanish Broom in all drainage areas and around all safety Devices. The lack of maintenance on this issue has been noticed and needs attention!!!

  3. I’m concerned that taking a crowded Highway 18 to San Bernardino, with both the regular commuters AND the 330 GVL/Running Springs/Big Bear drivers, will cause a ton of congestion with no effort at relieving it, and “giving yourself extra time” translates as “leave three hours earlier.”
