“At times, our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” – Albert Schweitzer

The flame from Dr.Schweitzer kindled the direction of my entire lifetime. Gratitude runs deep. His passion for service and humanitarian deeds nurtured a deep abiding service through the decades. Albert Schweitzer lived in service to all living beings. Known best for his reverence for life, he brought medical practices to Africa, where he devoted decades of assistance.

“Everyone can have their own Lambarene.” These were words given to a colleague about to travel back to Switzerland, and heavy of heart as he said a goodbye to his beloved mentor Dr. Schweithzer at his African hospital.  In his beautiful and tender way, Schweitzer said that we could be grateful that you were here, and that one did not have to travel to Africa to do service. That can happen right where we are. To give a portion of our life to others, to help them grow, become all they can be, and to bring healing to others who may need a guiding hand as they journey.

There is great joy in helping to light the heart and spirit of another. Albert Schweitzer devoted decades to this endeavor and yet understood that the gift was his. As a physician, theologian, author, musician and humanitarian, he practiced his art and science until his death in Lambarene at age 90.

Who lights your flame? (And who do you inspire with your spirit and way of living). Find those that inspire you in turbulent times. Let your intuition guide you as your flame rekindles amid the glow of another. Albert Schweitzer and others in history can light our flames timelessly. The cord of his devotion still stirs us. Some say his life of renunciation reflected the spirit of Gandhi, also selfless and serving. In this greatness, we can find our own.  Helping others brings abundant health gains. We can live longer and in greater balance and peace. We align with the vibration of joy while helping another. Some have reported improvement with chronic pain issues. Others find that depression diminishes…or even vanishes.

Ana Sandoiu references the “warm glow” that we gather from our generosity. A recent study shows that stress and anxiety can be reduced from acts of service. Undoubtedly giving carries a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Being a helper ranges from serving at a soup kitchen, coaching a sport in your community, feeding baby birds at a sanctuary, to projects that are individually crafted.  Giving a music lesson, tutoring an adult who wants to read, carrying groceries to the car for someone in need, or giving a troubled young person a guiding hand lend themselves to a mutual profit.

We usually think of healthy eating, good sleeping habits and regular exercise as health helpers. There is strong medicine in being a helper.  A grace arises as we give our innate gifts. For some, generosity is a way to lower blood pressure, improve mental health, extend life, and reduce chronic health concerns.

There is a river of gratitude flowing in each caring deed. That vibration enhances our minds, bodies and spirits. There is no question that a kind, compassionate and giving life brings rewards to self and all others in our world. Find your calling in the world of service. See what matches your heart.

Every time a flame is kindled, a being glows. As I head to the prison to deliver life literacy lessons, the room lights up with the brilliance of the men who attend. We spend a few hours exploring ways to leave old lives behind and welcome life in community as men of promise and prospect.  In this time of giving, I am the receiver. My heart glows with their gifts, their inspiration and their deep integrity to become men of purpose. This time is rich beyond measure. Spirit wealth serves all. As we each walk in our separate directions, the men to their prison protocol and I to life outside, hearts remain in communion and spirits soar. Each one touches one more layer of our humanity. We are a community of gratitude in parting and our well-being is a rapturous gift to carry.

Nurture your light. Rest when it dims. Explore quiet ways of renewing. Healing music, meditation, gentle movement, reading inspirational books, writing, and solitude are prescriptions for renewal. Even while darkened your radiance remains. The light within, even in the wings, is still light. Some believe that light to be everlasting, your ethereal inscription in this world, a glow to glisten as life unfolds.
