The happiness-health connection is real. Science is standing behind the notion that happy times bring good health. Positive experiences and emotions can lead to longer, healthier lives. Harvard Health describes being in the flow of happiness. Time becomes timeless. We lose track of time and don’t watch the clock. The moments just happen and we become part of their mystical glow. Rather than being focused on self, we are pulled into the moment and are filled with delight Work becomes a form of purposeful play or something we absolutely love doing. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter spend their days building houses for those in need. Their happiness reaches out to all those around them, an infectious union of purpose and joy. Let the moments of life thrill. All day long notice things that inspire you…something you read, something you notice while out in the world or in your work world. Be dedicated to finding the elation that fills your entire being with happiness. Start slowly if this is a new practice. One step at a time as you find the rapture of gladness around you.  Your body chemistry, your immune system, your emotional center and your spirit rise in harmony to the gift of happy times. To sustain health we need to be consistent in our happiness, not just experiencing an isolated event. Over and over again, fill up the happy tank. Look for those in your life who will walk with you to the gateway of laughter, love, gladness and conversation that lifts hearts high. This natural elation becomes medicine. Norman Cousins, the noted wellness pioneer, author and journalist, found that ten minutes of laughter gave two hours of painless sleep.  He called laughter a drug. Cousins said that after his discovery of the power of laughter as a remedy for pain, he threw away his pain and sleeping meds. He said that laughter itself had an analgesic effect, clearing the pain. Cousins was widely recognized for his cutting-edge discoveries with regard to alternative wellness practices. The biochemistry of emotion became his area of highest interest. He was awarded numerous honorary degrees for his commitment to the innovative idea of the regenerative power of the human body through positive emotion and experience. The Marx Brothers reruns, Candid Camera and a deep belief in his ability to reverse illness brought him to full remission of an incurable, degenerative disease. His medical physician became a partner in Cousin’s care as they traveled the arduous path to recovery. In times of illness, keep the happiness-health connection going. Do things you love as you can, even for a short time. with your doctor’s okay if there are related concerns. Laughter was the catalyzing factor in Cousin’s recovery, though it emerged from his deep belief in remaining positive and purposeful in the face of every medical challenge. Everybody Loves Raymond, The Golden Girls, and Lily Tomlin are good medicine for me. Find yours. Keep gladness going. Craft many lovely moments and enjoy each one. Let happy hour become happy hours.
