Dr. Jane’s Daily Insights – Become a Guardian to Yourself

By Dr. Jane Guttman

“Wellness encompasses a healthy body, a sound mind, and a tranquil spirit. Enjoy the journey as you strive for wellness.” ~Laurette Gagnon Beaulieu

Health is not the absence of disease. There is a continuum of wellness and we change positions on that scale throughout our lives. In acute illness we get tossed to the low end of the spectrum and then upon healing we move back to a more optimal position. Some know the gift of being at the high end, living in complete wellness in all aspects of self. Others carry the weight of chronic conditions, some of which are life-limiting or life-threatening. Take a moment to check where you are on the spectrum of wellness and consider what you can do to move toward the greater level of health you want.

Sometimes a family history dims our hopes for a long and healthy life. Other times an unexpected and enduring illness arrives and turns life into clouds of challenge. Or an urgent medical event arises and alters the course of our health status for the long run. There are many different circumstances that occur, which alter our dreams and plans for the life we envisioned.

Our family history has cancer and heart disease…two maladies that can steal life. History is only one aspect of predicting our future health status. On a positive note, it allows us to make prudent health choices at an early age and deter the legacy left for us. Consider all the healthy practices open to you that can reduce the sting of a tough history. Become an information specialist, and find some big answers to the looming matters that concern and sometimes haunt you in your quest for a life with wellness.

Tend to all aspects of you. Body, mind, spirt. What happens to one, happens to all. Begin with a tranquil spirit, which fosters a sound mind. Then we have the best chance for healthy bodies. Many integrative health care workers teach that we get sick first in the mind, in the mental and emotional aspects of ourselves. Be a tender and wise caregiver to your heart, as the essence of emotion. Watch for signs and then show up to comfort and redirect. A simplified version is that our minds are sound as a result of mind and body chemistry in balance. Of course, many other factors are involved, though balance is the key. There is constant dialogue between mind and body. Emotions have the last word on many levels. Stay in a positive place even in a stormy time. Look for resolution and for life to stabilize.

Gibran wrote, “Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.” Said to be inseparable, know that the vibration of joy lifts us high into the realm of healthful possibilities, even as the sorrow lingers or dissipates.  Where one is, the other is as well. As humans, we can feel moments of serenity even in a sorrowful time. Look for the places of lightness. Share your struggles and they will lighten. Give your secrets to the wind and to the kind hearts waiting to hear you. Seek tranquility in all the forms that resonate with you and your life. Be a fervent advocate for your wellness. More sleep. Less sleep. More food. Less food. More community. More solitude. Learn what works best for you. Gently let those in your life know what you need. Be firm, be funny, be loving and be authentic for your vision of wellness. First of all, your life is yours. You belong to you. Then share with your loved ones. Create a mosaic of harmony with mind –body- spirit. .Become a guardian to yourself.
