Dr. Jane’s Daily Insights – A Stone Given in Love

By Dr. Jane Guttman

“A turquoise given by a loving hand carries with it happiness and good fortune.” ~ Arabic proverb

Turquoise is a keeper. Writers often use this stone to enhance the art of words. The words gather together in harmony and clarity. Since I’m working in a prison setting with men who are in deep search of self-acceptance and self-forgiveness, I bring small pieces to urge the men to keep their search going. I urge them to write love letters to self. Self-love is a stranger to many who are incarcerated. Word got out about the stones and when I walk through the facility, I am asked if I have an extra one to pass along. I usually do. Crystal scholars herald Turquoise as a stone to call in sell-appreciation and self-love.

The prison men know that self-love and self-acceptance are partners. When they address one, they find the other close at hand. Today at our emotional intelligence-focused program, one very young man said his life can’t get going till he loves himself. Incarcerated since age 14, and now 14 years later, he has at last recognized the thread that will allow his life to move forward.

Through the ages, many have found Turquoise to assist in various life experiences, physical, emotional and spiritual. Of course, as an adjunct to the medical care we would seek. This stone is considered to be a protective stone, and one that harmonizes body/mind well-being and solace. Turquoise is one of the stones that is universally recognized for its peace and beauty. Cultures throughout the world have honored it. Cultivated in Native American custom, Turquoise is believed to carry a universal code that allows our minds to connect to the universe.

A symbol of nobility and wisdom, Turquoise is considered to be one of the oldest stones in civilization. Turquoise is considered to be a stone for finding wholeness and truth. (Simmons. 2005) Use this stone for overall well-being, serenity and peace. This mineral lifts our spirits and can restore vitality. Lore attributes this stone to safe travel and as a safeguard for pets. Those seeking nonmedical support for eye health can benefit from this stone. Judy Hall identified Turquoise as help for cataracts. (Hall, 2006)  You can keep a small stone at your bedside table. Those seeking clear communication can benefit. Choose this stone to manifest compassion and move toward forgiveness. Turquoise fosters emotional intelligence and in turn, these positive emotional vibrations reach out to others and return to us in kind. On an emotional level, this stone can be used for self-forgiveness, self-acceptance and release of regret. (Ahsian, 2005)

If you’re looking for something to add to your meditation practice, this is a good choice.  Turquoise is ready to lift your spirit and allows alignment with your soul’s authentic voice. Old patterns can be dissolved. Let go of the old and stale habit energies. Consider wearing or carrying Turquoise to enhance your mental outlook and emotional vibration. .

When a stone is given in love and with a gracious heart, it becomes a gift of joy and well wishes. Some believe that when given, the healing properties are magnified. If a birthday, anniversary or another occasion is around the corner, give the gift of this valued mineral. Keep that gem close to your heart in stormy times and celebrate with it when life bestows sweet and stirring moments Turquoise will bring you closer to your own heart and to your spirit. Crystal sages often consider Turquoise to be a vibrational bridge between heaven and earth. Through the gentle lens of this stone, we can see our own divinity.

Please note:  Turquoise in raw form has a toxic residue. Please wash your hands after handling it. Tumbled forms and jewelry in polished form are non-toxic.

Crystals have been used through the ages for enhancing wellness. We know that they offer support to well-being and wellness in addition to the medical treatment that each one chooses for their health status. The healing properties of crystals reference balancing mind, body and spirit, and does not imply “cure” as in the allopathic model.
