Car Fire Highway 18 and Upper Waterman

At 3:56 p.m. on June 8th 2018, California Highway Patrol received reports of a car fire on Highway 18 just before Upper Waterman.

The vehicle was a black VW Jetta with an engine fire that was well involved. Witnesses at the scene report that an unknown motorist driving a white Ford pickup truck stopped and was able to hold back to flames until fire crews could arrive.

A passing U.S. Forest Service team stopped and used water bags, a backpack designed for portable firefighting, to keep the fire under control until San Bernardino County Fire arrived.

An engine from Station 227 at the bottom of the hill responded. By 4:12 PM, the fire was fully extinguished. San Bernardino County Fire was standing by for the California Highway Patrol who was dispatching a tow truck as of 4:30 p.m. Due to the fast response of fire crews, the blaze had no chance of spreading the nearby brush. The single occupant of the vehicle was uninjured and Highway 18 remains open at this time.
