At 4:05 p.m. on Monday, a call went in to CHP dispatch of a jackknifed big rig on Highway 38 at mile marker 21.00.

A U.S. Foods truck, heading down bound on its normal route, hit a patch of ice and lost control. The truck had chains as required by CHP at the time in that area.

The truck came to rest blocking both northbound and southbound lanes. An off-duty San Bernardino County Probation officer and a Big Bear Sheriff Captain arrived on scene. The Captain was able to relay information directly to to the CHP.

A Deputy from the Yucaipa Sheriff Station arrived on scene as well and helped the driver maneuver the truck. Approximately 20 minutes went by with traffic stopped in both directions while they were working to get the truck unstuck. Finally, long before the tow truck would have arrived, the driver was able to get his truck free and back on the road.

There was no damage to the vehicle, no injuries and no other vehicles involved. A report was not requested by CHP and the roadway was immediately opened.
