French toast is a breakfast cornerstone; you can serve it topped with a variety of fruits and syrups, or with powdered sugar or whipped cream…or all of the above! You can serve it stuffed or try layering two slices with Nutella and bananas for a sweet treat.

French Toast Recipe

Ingredients:

6 slices white bread

4 eggs

1/4 cup half-and-half

1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 tsp. granulated sugar

1 tbsp. butter

Directions:

For best results, leave your bread out overnight. Slightly stale bread soaks up the eggs much better than very fresh bread.

Prepare a place for the dipped toast to rest before cooking by lining a baking sheet with paper towels and then placing a wire cooling rack on top. This will allow the excess egg mixture to drip off of the bread, and the paper towels make for easy cleanup.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, nutmeg, vanilla, and sugar and beat very well, until the mixture is well combined and smooth.

Take the bread and submerge it into the egg mixture, one slice at a time, flipping once. Remove the coated bread to the prepared baking sheet/rack. Repeat until all of the slices are dipped and coated.

Heat a large skillet over medium/high heat and melt the butter. Cook the French toast in the hot butter in batches, adding more butter if necessary as you go. Serve hot with your choice of toppings.
