Beach Goers Flee Flames as Silver Fire Engulfs Campground at Silverwood Lake

At 1:21 pm on 7/14/18 emergency crews responded to the Silver Fire at Silverwood Lake. Unconfirmed reports from the scene indicate that the fire may have started at a BBQ or campfire pit in a campground and quickly burned everything in a path from that campground to the lake’s edge.

Chairs, towels and camping gear was strewn about in an obvious haste to evacuate. Burned bicycles and other recreational equipment clearly indicated how fast the fire spread out of control. California State Park Rangers opened all exits and service roads to allow the mass egress of vehicles and campers, swimmers and boaters on foot.

As of 5:00 pm, the fire was at 30% containment and remapped to 7.5 acres. The beach and campgrounds have reopened.

The official cause of the fire is being investigated at this time. This article will be updated with further details as they become available.
