At 8:47 a.m. on Saturday, a solo vehicle traffic collision was reported on State Route 18, just north of Deep Creek Drive in Arrowbear. The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Running Springs Fire, and CalFire responded to the area and found a Nissan pickup truck about 20 feet over the side of the highway. The solo occupant was able to self-extricate from his vehicle without injury.

According to the driver, who did not wish to be identified, he had left his family’s cabin in Green Valley Lake and was headed towards Running Springs. He was in four-wheel drive off Green Valley Lake Road, but when he got to the highway, the roads appeared fine, so he put his truck in two-wheel drive. As he traveled westbound on SR18, he hit a patch of ice, slid over the right embankment, and slid about 20 feet down the embankment, where he hit a small boulder. The rock caused his vehicle to flip on its side before coming to rest on a small tree, about 25 feet from the house below.

The roadway was closed temporally, as tow trucks worked to recover the vehicle, resulting in major congestion on the 18 and 330 coming into to area. The cause of the accident is under investigation, but speed and slippery roads are believed to be factors.
