Dr. Jane’s Daily Insights – Heart Well Being Part 1

By Dr. Jane Guttman

As it turns out, one of the most heart healthy habits is community. Being with family, being with friends, being connected, experiencing communion.  The eminent physician, Dr. Dean Ornish, well-known for his Reversal of Heart Disease program, teaches that being in community is a practice that cannot follow other practices, and must be established in priority with nutrition, exercise and other healthy heart practices. The relationship between emotion and heart health is palpable.  Most of us know the hazards that anger brings to our heart. As significant, are the emotions of depression, loneliness, and isolation. Subtle as compared to anger, the emotion of fire, the quieter stated emotions can be devastating to our heart health as well as to other serious life-threatening conditions. Make sure you seek out a community. This can be family, extended family, a dear friendship, a beloved pet, co-workers that resonate with your spirit, and the folks in your community at-large. The librarian, the greeter at your favorite eatery, a massage therapist, your hair stylist. All part of your world. All possible choices to care about you. My hair stylist is retiring. We have been in a friendship now for over 25 years. She has listened, I have listened, and we have laughed together. Shared stories. Call someone to share your story. Call to hear someone’s story. Email. Text. Use social media to connect. I have had the glorious honor of sharing social media with my first students, now almost 50 years ago!  We love our connection. Hearts are lifted in these moments of shared love and compassion. Our hearts resonate with the presence of another. Expand your world. Reach out to those in isolation. A heart lifted is a heart beating in resonance with wellness.
