At 8:02am on Monday, a 9-1-1 call was placed to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBSO) by staff at Rim of the World High School after “gunshots were heard in the forest near the school”. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was placed on lockdown. At 8:22am the School District sent out a message to parents informing them of the situation, with the gun shot came from a nearby hunter. The Sherriff’s Department later confirmed that there were hunters in a legal hunting area nearby, however, it is unknown if they fired any shots. Multiple witnesses on campus reported through social media that a student “slammed a gate” near the welding shop around the same time, possibly being confused as a gun shot. Sheriff Deputies conducted a thorough search of the campus and determined there was not threat to student safety. At 9:21am a message was sent to the parents notifying them that the lockdown had been lifted.

At 9:34am on Monday, another 9-1-1 was placed to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, this time by staff at MPH Middle School, again reporting from a student that “gunshots were heard in the forest near the school”. The campus was placed on lockdown and Deputies along with San Bernardino County Fire Department (SBcFD) responded to the school. At 9:53am it was determined that there was no safety threat to the students. At 10:22am a notice was sent to parents informing them of the incident.

Coincidentally, the SBSO and SBcFD was participating in a previously-scheduled active shooter drill at Grandview Elementary. And, to add to the fear and confusion, a vegetation fire reported at 9:30am in Valley of Enchantment created a large response of emergency vehicles from across the area, including helicopters dipping water out of Papoose Lake.
