Stolen Vehicle Collides with Tree on Highway 38

On the morning of July 11th, at 10:04 a.m., a call went into 911 dispatch reporting a solo vehicle that had collided with a tree on Highway 38 and South Fork Campground. The reporting party stated that the male and female occupants of the vehicle were yelling and screaming. The male driver was out of the vehicle, with the female passenger still inside.
 A few minutes later, dispatch received reports of shots fired in the vicinity. All responding medics were advised to stage out of the area and await law enforcement. California Highway Patrol arrived on scene along with San Bernardino Sheriff’s and dertimened that the scene was clear to enter. Medics from 283 Sugarloaf, 282 Big Bear City, and 98 from Angelus Oaks arrived on scene and checked out both patients, who declined medical treatment at the scene.
Upon further investigation the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Riverside, and both occupants were detained at the scene. California Highway Patrol is investigating whether there were in fact shots fired, and what other charges they may face.
The scene is active at this time, and we will provide more details as they become available. The vehicle was traveling upbound on 38 when it lost control and collided with the tree. Please be advised to use caution in the area while they conduct their investigation. And towing will be recovering the vehicle after the vehicle search is complete.
