So hearty and tasty, it’s no wonder split pea soup has been a culinary standard for centuries. This classic and easy recipe is sure to please.

Slow Cooker Ham and Split Pea Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

1 lb. dry green split peas

1 small yellow onion – diced

4 medium carrots – chopped

3 stalks celery – chopped

3 cloves garlic – minced

1 ½ tsp. smoked paprika

1 tsp. salt

½ tsp. black pepper

1 ½ cups diced ham

2 bay leaves

6 cups chicken broth

Directions:

Pick through the split peas to make sure there are no rocks or other debris. Rinse them very thoroughly, and drain well.

Place the onion, carrots, and celery into the crock of your slow cooker. Add the split peas in a layer over the vegetables, then add the ham, paprika, salt, pepper, and bay leaves.

Pour the chicken broth over the other ingredients in the slow cooker, but don’t stir yet. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, then stir the soup well to combine the ingredients. Use an immersion blender* to blend in some of the peas, to thicken the soup. Serve hot.

*If you do not have an immersion blender, try using a potato masher. Alternatively, scoop out some of the peas from the soup into a smaller bowl and smash them up with the back of a fork, then return them to the soup and stir them in. Repeat as necessary.
