The Spring 2019 Trout Derby at Lake Gregory kicked off on Saturday at 7:00am. The annual event was hosted by the Lake Gregory Regional Park. The cool air and cloudy skies made for perfect fishing weather. By 2:00pm, the winners were announced. Cash prizes were awarded for the three biggest fish caught.

Third place and $250.00 was awarded to Tony Arredondo who reeled in an impressive 4.9 pound rainbow trout. Second place and $500.00 was awarded to Tim Smith, whose catch weighed in at 6.2 pounds. First place and $1,000.00 was awarded to Robert Balos, whose 27” beast tipped the scales at 7.1 pounds.

Robert’s “fish story” will likely sound like a tall tale when he tells it to his fishing buddies. About an hour before his jackpot catch, he snagged his lure. Not wanting to lose it, he stripped down to his skivvies, and braving the cold water, wadded out into the lake to retrieve his jig. His cheapness, as explained by his brother-in-law, paid off, and he netted the largest trout he has ever caught.
