Shelly Campa, who had been reported missing by her husband on Tuesday evening, was located Wednesday afternoon by Sheriff’s Aviation. While a little dehydrated, Shelly was uninjured.

Search efforts also consisted of Big Bear Sheriff’s Station deputies and Bear Valley Search and Rescue. Even members of the community gathered at the local market in their off-roading vehicles, ready to scour the area.

The missing person report was received at the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station around 6:45 pm on July 23rd, when Shelly’s husband had not seen or heard from her since earlier that afternoon. Shelly had texted her husband around 1:00 p.m. to let him know that she would be off-roading near God’s Eye in Big Bear.

Only expecting to be gone for an hour or two, Shelly’s Jeep got stuck in Horse Thief Flats. The area is known for being particularly difficult and has very limited cell service.

In an interview, Shelly stated that the incident will not prevent her from continuing to enjoy the outdoors, and that she will be sure to have an accompanying vehicle the next time she ventures into difficult terrain. She also wanted to express her extreme gratitude to the responders and community members that rallied to her aid.
